One of the most common questions we get: "Can you make a key if I don't have the original?" The short answer is yes — and there are two main techniques to do it.

Impressioning — Making a Key from the Lock Itself

Impressioning is a traditional locksmithing skill where a blank key is inserted into the lock and manipulated to leave marks on the blank wherever the pins contact it. The locksmith files the blank at those marks, reinserts, and repeats — gradually producing a key that matches the lock's pin pattern without ever having the original.

It works best on pin-tumbler locks (most residential deadbolts, padlocks, and cabinet locks) and takes 15–45 minutes depending on the lock's quality and the locksmith's experience. Higher-security locks with spool or serrated pins take longer but are still impressionable.

Decoding and Code Cutting

Many locks have a code stamped on the cylinder face, the lock body, or accessible through the keyway with a decoder tool. Once a locksmith reads the bitting code (the sequence of depths that corresponds to each cut on the key), they can cut an exact key from that code without the original.

For houses: Schlage and Kwikset cylinders are typically decodable. For vehicles: see our post on lost car keys with no spare — VIN-based code cutting is the standard approach for cars.

When It Works Well

  • House deadbolts and knob locks (most common request)
  • Padlocks — if the brand/model is on file in our code database
  • Filing cabinets, desk drawers, and small furniture locks
  • Mailboxes and storage lockers
  • Older vehicles without transponder chips

When Replacement Is Smarter

If the lock is old, worn, or low-quality, the cost of impressioning or decoding may approach the cost of simply replacing the lock. We'll tell you honestly on-site which makes more sense. If you're considering a lock upgrade anyway, understand what rekeying is vs. full replacement — sometimes rekeying a new lock to your preferred key profile is the most cost-effective path.

What It Costs in Ottawa

Impressioning a residential lock: $85–$140 depending on lock type. Code cutting from a decoded cylinder: $65–$100. These are generally less expensive than a full lock replacement, and you keep your existing hardware. If you want a spare made from the new key, ask during the same visit — adding a spare key duplication at that point costs only the key blank.
